Note: The paths and steps can be damp. Good footwear and warm clothing recommended.

Messenger of faith

The legend of St Beatus

From Stone Age people to Goethe - they've all been here.

The name of the St Beatus Caves goes back to the Irish messenger of faith Beatus, who is said to have lived in the cave in the 2nd century - or so legend has it. According to legend, he drove a dragon out of the cave. What is certain is that even Stone Age people found shelter here. And centuries later, the hidden world beneath the Niederhorn attracted explorers, poets and adventurers - a cave adventure with a long history.

Flood safety

When the cave shows its full power

An early warning system deep inside ensures your safety.

In the event of prolonged or heavy rain, the current and water level in the cave can rise rapidly. The Beatus Caves Co-operative continuously monitors weather developments and uses an early warning system located deep inside the cave system.

During floods, the caves are safe and accessible up to the waterfall in the Milton Grotto. This is where the power of nature shows itself in its most impressive form. The waterfall on the outside area also develops enormous energy during high water - when the masses of water thunder down into the lake, it is an unforgettable sight.

Insider tip

The cave tour is particularly worthwhile in rainy weather: the waterfall in the outdoor area is then at its most spectacular. Flood water can dissipate quickly - your safety is guaranteed at all times.
